Zaramama, or Mama Zara, is the goddess of grain. Her name means 'Grain Mother', and she was highly venerated as a goddess related to the harvest. She was most directly associated with maize, and it was believed that any odd-shaped ear of corn or humanoid maize stalk was a physical manifestation of her in this world.

Sometimes, these stalks would be dressed in fine clothing, most commonly a robe and shawl with a silver clasp. These effigies would be treated as bearing the living energy of Zaramama. Alternatively, the odd-shaped ears of corn that weren't quite humanoid were instead taken to a willow tree and hung up. These would then be danced around in festivity, and at the end of the ritual it would be burned down as an offering to Zaramama, asking for a plentiful harvest.
